Abstract
This study examined the direct and mediated contributions of stress mediators(spirituality, optimism, and family supports) to stress sources(symptom, side effects and worry related with cancer) and depression among older cancer patients(stress outcome). Applying Pearlin(1981)¡¯s ¡¯Stress Process Model¡¯, the research model was proposed, and tested to the 269 older cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Spirituality(stress mediator)was not found to contribute to depression directly. Spirituality was found to decrease to depression indirectly through the mediation of more optimism and more family support, the mediation of more optimism and less fatigue, and the mediation of more optimism and less sleep problems. The results showed the comprehensive framework of the older cancer patient¡¯s depression. Therefore, the results suggested the interdisciplinary intervention program based on the association spiritualty and optimism will effectively decrease depression in older cancer patients.
